Greywacke Wild Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand 2013

Greywacke Wild Sauvignon is made by Kevin Judd, one of Marlborough’s pioneer winemakers whose career linked with the global profile of New Zealand, as a result of 25 years of making infamous Claudy Bay. 

Fermented in old oak barrels using wild yeast, hence the name, this is an alternative, intricate style Sauvignon.

Complexity, depth and opulence. Rich and creamy. Pear, peach and melon flavours, freshness of ginger and nectarine blended with oak, vanilla and buttery flavours, more Chardonnay like style than herbal and 'cat pee' dominated Sauvignon. Full body, long finish.

Many in the region have described this as the vintage of a lifetime. Very dry, lots of sunshine but not super-hot. Smoky but not sulphurous. Almost a note of honey and opens to a hint of Sauvignon wild herbs and citrus. Very intense on the palate, very direct – spicy and clear-cut and showing little specific fruit flavour but masses of depth and length, resulting in a rich texture. by Julia Harding

The 2013 Wild Sauvignon Blanc has a beautiful floral nose of orange blossoms and jasmine with underlying ripe nectarine, tangerine and spiced apple notes plus a touch of elderflower. Medium-bodied, ripe, expressive and with plenty of character, it fills the palate with perfumed stone fruit flavours, finishing long with a herbal lift. by Lisa Perotti-Brown
