Domaine Zind Humbrecht Alsace Riesling Roche Granitique 2016

New Riesling from one of the top Alsace producers. Grapes come from granite soils of Grand Cru Brand vineyards producing wines that are very expressive and aromatic even at a young age.
The has loaded with intense fruits of citrus, orange, lime, fresh pineapple, mango and sweet apricots. Then follows the fresh ginger, lemongrass, pronounced stony minerality and honey. Despite its exotic intensity and full body, the wine is fine, elegant, pure and refreshing that lingers in the mouth very long. Already open to enjoy now but will age beautifully. Incredible value.

Olivier Humbrecht's 2016 Riesling "Roche Granitique" comes from vineyards located on the poor granitic soils of the Brand hillside. If you so will, it is the "second wine" of the Grand Cru Brand. In 2016, these were the first Rieslings harvested, "but the fermentation took a year to complete," says Olivier. Sourced from 15- to 38-year-old vines, the 2016 has an intense yellow color and offers rich, warm fruit on the nose but also delicate flinty notes from the granite terroir of the grand cru. On the palate, the vertically structured wine is fresh, refined and elegant, revealing remarkable finesse and vitality on the salty and piquant finish that reveals remarkable length with structured, intensely lush and tropical fruit flavors. The yields were 65 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine fermented to 12.3% alcohol plus eight grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted at the domaine in June 2018. —by Stephan Reinhardt
