Domaine Santa Duc Chateauneuf-du-Pape Le Pied de Baud 2016

Le Pied de Baud is located in the north of the appellation, on the gentle slopes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, one hectare of vines surrounded by forest. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault thrive here in the shade of a century-old oak tree, deeply rooted in alluvial soils of river gravel and clay, once deposited by the exuberant, prehistoric Rhône river. An old well indicating a high groundwater level, soothes the vigneron in times of drought.

One of the best producers in Gigondas, Domaine Santa Duc shows its mastery in Chateauneuf du Pape's cool climate vineyards as well. The wine has the elegance of the Northern Rhone with balance, finesse, purity and depth. Licorice, cherries, violets, wooden spices harmonized with freshness and silky soft tannins.

Certified Biodynamic wine, grapes are manually picked with very selective sorting and destemmed. 18 months aging in large oak casks and terracotta pots.

One of my favorite wines in the cellar, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Pied de Baud is full-bodied yet positively light, airy and elegant. Dried spices and licorice notes provide complexity to the cherry and plum fruit, wrapped together in a lovely, long, silky finish.
