Domaine de la Bongran Vire Clesse Jean Thevenet 2012 Burgundy

Known as the master of Mâconnais, Jean Thevenet makes wines as complex, fine and with aromatic power and freshness as a Puligny-Montrachet. Nobody in Burgundy makes wine the way the Thévenets do. Grapes hang on the vines of this traditional organically-farmed 15-hectare estate until they are ultraripe and even botrytised. The grapes are then gently squeezed in until the flavour and all the intensely honeyed aromatics have been extracted. They are then stored in the cellars at the Domaine until being released when they are ready to drink.

Neal Martin - Prices remain a fraction of what you would have to pay for a top Côte de Beaune, and I cannot recommend these highly enough.”

Allen Meadows - Burghound - "The quality of what is produced here is mind boggling."

***2012 Vintage is not rated yet but you can expect more ripe and fuller body wine***

92 Points, Neal Martin for Robert Parker (for 2011)
It has an absolutely divine bouquet that can barely contain its heady perfume of orange blossom, peppermint and wild fennel, just a smear of dried honey on top and maybe even a hint of truffle. This is so nuanced but, at the same time, very complex. The palate is well balanced with lemongrass and orange rind, marmalade surfacing midway through the experience. The acidity is very well judged and there is a very harmonious, almost Condrieu-like finish that has swagger and verve. What are you waiting for?... Grab some bottles.
